Anekaeshi (sweets)

It is a traditional sweet from the Hagiwara area of Gero City made of bean jam wrapped in a dough of rice powder and mugwort. "Ane(ru)" comes from the Hida region dialect for "Koneru" which means "kneading". "Kaeshi" means "repeating" in Japanese. This sweet thus came to be known as "Anekaeshi" as it is made by repeatedly kneading the dough. It can be enjoyed only in the spring time when mugwort is freshly harvested.
